Why is Norton Antivirus so Resource Hungry?

I am using the Norton Antivirus software provided with BT Yahoo Broadband. Startup and Close Down of my laptop takes for ever. BT Yahoo Help has been useless and Norton did not even reply to my Email. How can such popular antivirus software cause so many problems and is there a fix for my problem.

Norton wants to make sure that no programs are running that can harm your computer but in the process it overprotects your computer is some spots and underprotects in others. its really good I know it takes a long time. it checks everything thats why. try 2 update it by using windows updating on ur start up menu.
Norton is so hungry for information, because they are constantly updating informaiton to make sure their computers are staying on top of things. It's a good thing! Also, reply to nortons professional staff and network, on a serious tip, you couldn't find a better organization.

Take some advice and uninstall the thing. It's not even worth the trouble. I would suggest McAfee.Just not the Security Suite. Or Windows Live One Care. Both are good to me.
Ive got the same free package sitting there waiting to be installed. Last time i installed it i had to re-format and start again..It was so slow i could not believe it. I just use AVG free and Zonealarm firewall.(both of these are freeand brilliant) now, My pc is so much faster.My advice to you is uninstall Norton.(by the way its in Bt Yahoo applications) in add or remove programs.I hated norton big time. I also hear that it doesnt detect one or two trojans.
Like all popular software the only way to continue increasing sales is to add extra features, hence the original software becomes a bloated pig.

You really only need a virus checker, and a firewall.

As for e-mail the rule is simple, if you do not recognise the sender don't open it!

After you install Norton, go into each OPTION setting at the top.You can tweak or disable some or most of the offending items running. Norton seems to have about 9 sub-items all running at once, so check or disable those that you dont want.
