These service programs normally run in background without interacting with user directly and of course without showing any user interfaces. But when you run the shortcut to the software a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is show to you and is attached to the background service process. This doesn't mean you have just enabled the protection, it is only a graphical tool to monitor and configure protection and settings.

I think this is not a problem. As long as you update your AV software and do frequent system scans, this is not a problem. Your AV software will most probably scanned all the startup items for viruses, so that you can ignore the fact that it boots last.
Don't worry. It is far more important that your firewall starts early in the boot process. The few seconds it takes your anti-virus to start is not important as long as your firewall is protecting you from attacks on your ports after a reboot.

Both Norton and MacAfee have on-access scans which will scan files as you open them to make sure they don't have viruses. A lot of people don't like this because it is very resource intense to constantly be scanning files for viruses and will significantly impact performance on the system. Also, these tools are not free. But remember, you generally get what you pay for. You could use some free antivirus software you find on the internet somewhere, but it may not provide the quality or ease of use as some of the non-free vendors. Think about it....

What you can do is download the software to your desk top. Then unplug from server, and remove any and all protection previously that is on your computer. They could interfere with the new software.

Install the software, and if it askes for a code number, then call your provider and they will help you with a number and then let you know when to plug in your provider again. They should be able to talk you through what you need to do. I had to do this the other day. I was with my server for sometime getting the Protection set up. Also there is a site that may help you.

You'll also need a Firewall (even if you have the XP Firewall enabled). I'd recommend ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall.

However, an antivirus and firewall aren't the only tools necessary to keep your computer secure. You also need multiple anti-spyware applications and a secure browser.

Sorry, I'm not sure about Norton, but Avast! anti virus works very well. My dad is a networking Technician, and that is what he has all his clients use. Plus it is what I use.
What I would do is ditch the antivirus and get a firewall set up and download and install CCleaner. It will do everything that an Anitvirus will do plus more. When you go to your firewall through your Control Panel, it should have a link to download some firewalls. If not then search Google for 'freeware Firewall'. I have a set up like this and my computer runs faster than before I had my antivirus running 24/7.

It can be set to automatically receive updates every 4 hours, but is that really necessary? Yes, the more memory (files), the more time. You could try running the scan in the safe mode by hitting F8 as it boots up. Then reboot the computer after the scan. Also, delete the files in the temporary folder before the scan. One more thing would be to run the defragment program to compact the memory in the computer before you scan. Good luck.

I have the latest antivirus software installed on my Dell PC, and I just recieved a warning that I am at risk and vulnerable to another attack (the red "x"). I have everything running on Automatic LiveUpdate, but it seems like my "Antivirus software" has been turned off. AVG free will not install to a sever. It is for personal use only. I know because I tried to install it to Windows NT4 Small Business Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I use AVG File Server Edition. It comes with one server and 4 workstation license. That allowed me to protect 5 of my thirteen computers with he more advanced paid version. Will worth it in my opinion.

Security Center Problems with Norton Antivirus 2006 in XP?

Those of you who are familiar with Windows XP know that you have a "Security Center" in the Control Panel that keeps track of/watches/protects your PC... It monitors your firewall, antivirus software, among other things...

Anyway, to get to the point, I just installed Norton Antivirus 2006 and somehow my Security Center has been "disabled" ever since this was installed. I put the Norton on my computer cause I didn't have ANY Antivirus software at all.

When I go to open the Security Center I get this message:

The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" has not started or was stopped. Please close the window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service) and open the Security Center again.

Well, every time I restart my computer, I still get the same message...

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and see if the Security Center service is started. If not, right click and start it. I recommend you ditch Norton and get something else. I gave up after trying to upgrade 2 machines from the 2003 version to 2004. The lesser known products actually work much better.

Norton is so hungry for information, because they are constantly updating informaiton to make sure their computers are staying on top of things. It's a good thing! Also, reply to nortons professional staff and network, on a serious tip, you couldn't find a better organization.

Ive got the same free package sitting there waiting to be installed. Last time i installed it i had to re-format and start again..It was so slow i could not believe it. Norton antivirus NOP-slide attack?

so I've been reading up a bit on computers. and after reading NOP-slide attack it kinda reminded me of one time where my antivirus software was scanning my comp and it went into some directory in documents and settings and it just kept scanning some crazy file in "C:\doc%26sett\blah\blah\\\ ... \\\\\blah.foobar" . So basically my antivirus (norton) never really completed a scan because it can't just get past that one part. I had to uninstall norton and get avg. and avg said everything's good. So does this seem like a NOP-slide virus? or is it just norton?

Why does my McAfee antivirus program intercepts and deletes some installation files when installing

Got a big problem here, guys! I want to install WinPower to monitor a UPS on my system, but the bloody antivirus software deletes installation file and corrupts WinPower! This resulted in an unexpected shutdown of my PC. When I restarted, WinPower was running but it could not detect my UPS on any port. I am using a USB-to-serial converter cable for the UPS and the driver for that has been installed correctly.

I tried to disable the firewall of the antivirus program, but that had no effect. I also can't disable on-access scanning, because the software for some reason doesn't have that function. If I could do that, my problem with WinPower would probably be solved.

Anti-virus programs don't detect viruses, they detect strings of bytes that are typical of one virus or another. (I used to have McAfee keep complaining about programs I wrote, because one library routine looked like some virus it knew about.)

Turn McAfee off completely. Uninstall WinPower completely. Install WinPower. Turn McAfee back on. When McAfee complains about it, tell it to ignore that file.

And contact the McAfee people and tell them to rewrite the data file so that the program can tell the difference between WinPower and the virus it thinks is triggering it.

I have always wondered about that. It would be possible but I don't think they do. There are "anti-virus programs" that are promoted by spyware that offer to scan your computer for free and then want you to pay money to remove "system errors" that the program says it found. Those programs do not work and if you have a virus problem and you let them install on your computer things will just get worse. Microsoft makes Anti-virus software but if it was a defalt program that came with windows it would just give people another thing to complain about. And people would just shut it off and install something else anyway.

Depends on what operating system you have. XP is almost always 32 bit (the 64 bit version was not too popular). Vista, er could be either. If you don't know, then it is probably 32 bit.

The bit refers to the architecture of the processor, but a 64 bit processor can run 32 bit operating systems (not the other way around though)

They are talking about which window system you are on either the older 32 bit which is mostly standard for the computer population or the newer less software compatible 64 bit windows system. It has nothing to do with color bits. You probably need the 32 bit - First check your system and see which windows you are using to know for sure before you download. Interesting that BitDefender is actually trying to get up to speed in offering a 64 bit option - that's more than I can say for most software developers. Luck to you

I really don't care for Norton at all, it uses too many resources. If I can assume you are using a Windows based operating system, My suggestion would be to uninstall Norton completely. Use the firewall built into windows and Try "Windows Live Onecare" for Anti-virus and Spyware protection.I have used the beta version for a couple of months and I love it. Compared to the years of using "Norton System Works" and tolerating the bugs and high system overhead. Cudos to MS for a change. P.S. if you can afford it an inexpensive router with hardware firewall built in would give you more bang for the buck. Nowdays wireless firewall/routers are cheap, easy to intall, and let you share your internet connection with your laptop ect.

One of the really sweet things about Macs is they aren't very susceptible to viruses. Apparently, there are a few out there; however, I've been using Macs for about 7 years now and I've never had a virus. The only firewall I use is the one built into my router. I don't use antivirus software on it. I used to have some free AV software on an old iBook, but it bogged the computer down and I never had a virus, so I removed it. Occasionally, I have a free virus scan done, but nothing has ever been detected.

I don't have the details yet, because my laptop is in the service center, but the tech said that some problem on my 2 month old laptop were due to a trojan virus that my Norton Antivirus software had quarantined. Apparently, it still was able to cause destructive activities, including disabling my Norton Antivirus auto-updating routine. Now, I'm going to have to try to get the damage repaired myself and probably need to get in touch with Norton folks. Anyone else ever had this happen? What did you have to do to get your system back? How did you contact Norton (Symantec) - I didn't really see anything on their site that looked like it addressed this issue.

I'm really sort of fumed that Norton seemed to miss this, considering the tech told me this particular virus has been around for a while.

Well no virus software in infalible. But I don't think that Norton has been able to write a decent virus killer for the past three years or so. Last time I had it on my machine it slowed my system down by at least 25% and if it ever found anything it was never able to actually delete it.

If you want to pay, go for Kaspersky or Bitdefender. You get great cover balanced with ease of use.

If you want a freebie, use AVG anti virus which runs in the background and add Bitdefender 8 which is passive (you use it to scan suspect files.)

If your AVG is working good and updated, then you can disable windows asking for antivirus from control panel.

Yes or No is depending on the result. I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 7. I get what I pay for, and everyone does too. But I'm pretty sure that AVG is good for you. My recommendation is that you can use avast! software. It also has free edition.

Keep using AVG. Save the Norton disk for something more useful, like a drink coaster, frisbee, or shim.

I have being using AVG for almost three years and don't have any complaints, it is among the top rated freewares in almost all prestigious magazines on the web.
I am using AVG free edition, A-Squared Free, PC Tools Antivirus and Windows Defender all at once. Contrary to what you read on this forum, you CAN run more than one AV program at once with no conflicts or degradation of performance. However, I am running 4 gigs of RAM also, so I have a tremendous amount of RAM overhead to use for programs. The only software conflict I have ever had while running more than one AV program is between Norton and PC Tools on an old Windows 98 SE machine. I suspect I had more troubles than the AV conflict, but didn't care enough to try to fix it. I just trashed Norton instead............it was easier.
PCTools products do get good reviews. The good thing is they have free versions of their products. They work great. Spyware Doctor from the Google pack is a must. I highly recommend it. I bought Webroots Spysweeper and spyware doctor finds stuff spysweeper does not. Having both is a perfect combo and I recommend running two anti-spyware products.
