Where can I download free antivirus software?

I have an hp pavilion dv8000 laptop and it came with norton but I keep getting this message stating you are not protected against new threats. I try to click on "protect me now" and it says my subscription has expired and I have to renew it and theres a charge for that. What should I do? Is there anything better than Norton that will have me protected against viruses, spam, spyware etc...? Please help Thanks

AVG and ClamWin are both great free (ClamWin is even open source) anti-virus applications.

You'll also need a Firewall (even if you have the XP Firewall enabled). I'd recommend ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall.

However, an antivirus and firewall aren't the only tools necessary to keep your computer secure. You also need multiple anti-spyware applications and a secure browser.

For anti-spyware (on Windows XP), I recommend SpywareBlaster, Spybot - Search %26 Destroy, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Windows Defender. If you're running a version of Windows earlier than XP, you'll need to substitute SpywareGuard for Windows Defender. It may seem like a lot, but what one misses, the others will find.

Last but not least, the most secure (and easy to use, and functional鈥? browser is Mozilla Firefox. Don't forget to click the link to Firefox Add-ons which appears the first time you start Firefox, as the Extensions (Mozilla's name for a certain type of plug-in) hosted there can do anything from block ads (AdBlock Plus) to efficiently read web feeds (Wizz RSS).
