For an Anti-virus I would recommend AVG. The free version does have a few limitations (all free AVs do) but its updated daily and scans emails as they're downloaded. It also has a very low impact on system performance.

For Anti-Spy ware many people have many different opinions. I use Spybot - Search %26 Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007, Both programs find things the other does not and I have yet to find a program that can find everything by it self.
