Question about Norton Anti virus and virus detection?

I was browsing the internet yesterday and suddenlly I got a window that popped up from my Norton Antivirus software saying that Norton AntiVirus had detected a virus and that it has been immediately deleted. I ran a virus scan afterwards and there were no threats. I've never had this happen before so my question is, do I need to do anything, like go into the Norton and quarantine or do something to make sure my computer is threat-free? Or is it all taken care of? I don't know, it just seems too easy to have the software delete the virus immediately and then that's it!

Its all taken care of, but you should switch to mozilla firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

I think my computer has a virus. I don't know how it got there because I was away and I'm the only one that uses the computer. I never installed anything to the computer. It started all of this very spontaneously yesterday when just all of a sudden all of these popups kept popping up making it impossible to use my computer. I turned it off and back on and then the background only says restore active desktop. Now when Ill be on a website when I click on a link it goes to a random search website or goes to a website that is called dnserror.org. I also have a lot of popups compared to before. My dad thinks that its a conspiracy for companies to make money off of you and blames Mcaffee for it since they had a thing that popped up to renew my stuff. I don't have the money to buy any antivirus software and he doesn't believe viruses exist. How do I get rid of this and is there any legit free antivirus software out there?

Turn off System Restore. Load the application in normal mode but run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence.

I currently have Sky broadband and it takes me 45mins to download a 45 min tv show. I've been told that I should be able to download this in 10mins as I have 8meg broadband. What could be slowing down my connection? I share my connection (as you can also use it wirelessly) with my laptop and both are very slow. On my laptop it takes as long as 1hr to download an hour long podcast! My pc is connected through an ethernet cable and not wirelessly.

On my computer it also takes ages to play games (on Miniclip etc.) as the characters move very slowly. The graphics are of a lower quality than on my laptop.

I've asked around and been told I could have a virus on my computer and/ or spyware. I've downloaded SpyBot and ran it and destroyed anything its found. Is there any other free antivirus software you'd recommend?

Basically, do you have any ideas as to why my computer is so slow and is there any antivirus software you'd recommend?

Sounds like a scam to try to get you to DL a program that WILL put a virus on your system.

If your other AV programs are telling you you're safe I would bet you are.

I had the same problem and someone on the Geek squad told me to download something like a movie, album, and that would help. That was with my old computer that me and my cuz are working on so if it works I will tell ya. U cal also call the geek squad at best buy and they will help ya--even if you didn't buy it there. or jus give it a shot of penicillin to git rid of that virus lol

No it is not an antivirus software. It is only for spyware and adware.

AVG is one of the better free ones. If you're willing to pay for antivirus, I recommend Kaspersky. I would also recommend NOD32 but that 1 is for more advanced users.

Yes it is actually a very good program, mainly for spyware though. You can use it with AVG without any problem, but I actually prefer to use ad-aware with it. That is just my preference because I had AVG before I got Spybot S%26D, it didn't prevent or detect the virus I had so I had to reformat my computer. Some antivirus programs won't work if there is more than one on your computer. I know Norton used to be like that.
Spybot S%26D is not an anti-virus. It's an "anti-spyware".

You still need to have an anti-virus. AVG will do fine.

The two won't conflict with each other.

You also need a "firewall". Windows XP and Vista both come with firewalls, so you might not need one.

If you have all three of those things, you'll be very safe. The firewall and the anti-virus need to be running at all times. The anti-spyware should be ran weekly, and you should scan with the anti-virus every week.

What anti-virus do you use? If not Kaspersky, AVG, or McAfee, it could be a false threat.

1. I dnt know what is wrong but last week my laptop(1 month old) was surfing the net at great speeds like 1-2 secs per page!!

SP2 has been known to cause many problems after installing it. Particularly, it has caused some problems with some antivirus software. Finally, running two separate antivirus programs at the same time is just asking for trouble. You should do that because these programs step can step on each other's toes and wreak havoc on your computer.

My suggestions would be to disable both antivirus products and see if your computer runs alright. If it still doesn't run well, then SP2 mightbe your problem.

Then, run only on of the AV programs you have. Maybe just one of them is having problems? Scan your computer with each of them.. but not at the same time!

I am trying again with similar question of IE 7 getting error report of IE has encountered a problem and needs to close each time i try to close it i have selected report to microsoft and that of course dont help. and also i dont need to go and download avg antivirus or spyware I have updated antivirus software and additinal soft ware for spyware etc. I have hard time to beleive it is virus or spyware related, just hard when i have 3 computers i get same problem and so many others get the problem, and on this one its a fresh install from microsft disc of IE7 hard drive has completley been wiped and formatted etc. all windows updates done, all antivirus updates done, when uninstalled i have cleared he entry from my register, all that sort of stuff i am not a beginner with computers but this issue with IE is driving me crazy if you dont know please dont know for sure please dont attemp.. sorry just so many times and same answers, all saying virus cause so easy to say um must be a virus

I got it through some torrent from mininova.org.I am using NOD32 antivirus and panda antivirus software.

Only NOD32 recognised it and told me(warned me).But, panda antivirus is not able to detect it, and this warning was given by NOD32.

I tried the free online scanning by trendmicro, but to no avail.

I tried the online scanning by bitdefender, the closest I could come was in updating the virus signatures, and suddenly Internet explorer 7.0 closed and I got the error message, saying IE has to close,...

Please help me, I tried uploading the file to kaspersky and other online virus removers, but could not do it, as gmail and yahoo did not allow it.The file is only 78kb, but is not getting deleted/removed/renamed etc...

u can use comodo firewall pro.
Windows firewall is enough to protect you, if u want another firewall, u have to disable windows firewall first otherwise they will be conflicting each other and you will face another problem.

You can search the whole web for a free software (like zonal alarm) but then if you are working on a office network then you have to configure your firewall to access on the office network, if your pc is used at home and not connected to any network u dont require any configuration.

For antiviruses (Mcafee or norton or other), if they are not having inbuilt firewall, they will not be interfering with any other seperate firewall programs. But if they do have (like their internet security versions) they will be interfering anywith any other seperate firewall programs. In that case you dont even need other seperate firewall programs.

few days ago I installed a Antivirus software since I had some big popup problems, I have a wireless Network at home and tried to go online after I removed some Trojans, viruses and exe. programs from my computer, since then I can not connect to the Internet anymore and am also not able to restore my wireless connection settings in my NETWORK CONNECTION under ADVANCE since it doesn't let me enter advance.

Now I don't know if I have removed any windows components by mistake or is that because of the antivirus program ( I actually tried to disable AntiVirus Program and Firewall and tried it but still doesn't work) I don't know if I have to restore Windows but I would need to go to the Microsoft website and I can't access the Internet.

It seems your issue is caused by port blocking. Mostlikely port 80. Uninstalled, not disable , all of your 3rd party security s/w and try again.

Some 3rd party security s/w could still work on the background eventhough you have all of them disabled. That is why you need to remove/uninstall them.

Make sure you have the CD or know on how to reinstall them back after everything is back to normal.

I just noticed that my yahoo messenger is having a weird problem. I had installed yahoo messenger v7.5 and the problem is still there. I can login to the yahoo messenger with no problems and it is when I try to start a conversation with the other people, I can see myself typing the messages, however, when I send it, I do not see it in the message window and everything is blank, and I cannot see the messages sent to me from the other party either. It renders the messenger useless.

I am not sure what is wrong with it. I checked my setting for ZoneAlarm and everything seems to be fine.

Okay, iam about to throw my laptop out of the window, lately everything on my laptop is closing by itself, from IE to firefox to control panel and so does the system restore, everytime i restart my laptop i go to system restore it shows its off. So i figured i had a virus, i tried over 4 antivirus software from macafee to panda etc and all of them failed during installation, none of the programs made it past the second step and then all the sudden the setup is gone, sometimes even the downloaded icon for the software just disspaears off the desktop, what the hell could be wrong? i cant download any software to check for anything, i even went in safemode. I formated it and reinstalled windows all over but the same problem came back. Please advise.

Hmm.. The simple and easiest way would be to really throw your laptop out of the window and get a new one.

The not so easy step would be to change your hard-disk, it should be your hard-disk's fault and its not going to be cheap to buy a new one.

Do you have a warranty ? If you do have a warranty send it to the company you bought it from, tell them the problem and get them to fix it for you.

Pretty good specs, decent price. Generally speaking, only use Vista on machines with dual core. Otherwise it's horrendously slow, but you've got one there. If you're looking for a gaming machine though, opt out of Vista and stick with XP, it's older, but far more stable for running games. Other than that it looks like a great machine. Of course however I must make the plug, personally, I'd just save up a little more and grab yourself a nice Macbook Pro. :P ;) Long live Apple!

The last time I moved, I lost the CD's that came with my Dell.

I want to reformat now, called Dell, and got new CD's sent.

Before I go ahead and start reformating I just wanted to make sure I have everything I need.

The 2 CD's Dell just sent me are:

- Operating System, already installed on your computer, reinstallation CD, Win XP Home Edition SP 2

- Application, already installed on your computer, for reinstalling Dell tools system software. Contents: antivirus software (sw), support sw, multimedia sw and internet sw

People telling you that you that the Windows and Application CD's have the drivers you need have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. You need to install all the drivers for your hardware, video, sound, etc. etc. and they're not included on either the Widows or Application cd's. You either have to use the included drivers cd or download them from Dell's website. Period.

The specs on it look alright, though I'd personally do away with Vista Home Basic and put XP Pro on it, and replace McAfee with Kaspersky or something else. Other than that, it looks alright for the price, but if you don't need to take it with you, you could build a desktop PC with very similar specs for much less.

Edit: Ok, since it has to be a Dell, and has to be a laptop, scratch the build the PC suggestion. My suggestion about changing out Home Basic and McAfee still stands, however. If you do this, I'd go with Office 2003 instead of 2007, since 2007 doesn't run on XP if I'm not mistaken, and would be cheaper if it's still available for purchase, and you might be able to go with a single core processor if you don't need the extra power a dual core offers, to shave a bit off of the price.

There is a problem when i search from yahoo or google any search item. If i would search for real player software (example) from google, then it shows every link related to Real Player from which if i choose any one link and click on it or open it in new window, it redirects to unknown or irrelavant page which is not at all the same as the url google shows in the search result at the bottom in green color. I think i have downloaded some virus. I tried every thing using many spyware and antivirus softwares like -

c) Spyware terminator

d) mcafee

and other small softwares but none shows any results.

1.Can you use another browser like Firefox, and type what you want in the right-corner search box.

2.Download Avast! Antivirus from http://www.avast.com

3.Some viruses redirect your page to a specific page. Go to the file C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and open that file by Notepad. See if the virus redirects any webs to any specific pages.

I have had a similar problem before and took it into the geek squad and they said it was riddled with viruses. At the time I had Norton antivirus software that scanned every 24 hours and said that there no viruses. Now, I have had major problems with my computer running ultra slow, not responding, crashing and keep getting windows popping up from Internet Explorer saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. It has escalated to the point where even shutting the computer down and restarting is not cutting it any more. I do not have any anti virus software because I haven't been able to afford to get some but these problems were happening way way before my software expired. As long as you have good quality antivirus and spyware software you'll be fine. It would be preferable to set the software to run in real time so if something does pop up it can be dealt with immediately. Dang virus got in again. Had to completely restart the computer to it's out of the box settings. Which is antivirus is better? I would go with McAfee. I recently switched from Norton to McAfee. Norton and McAfee are the same when it comes to removing viruses but the McAfee version you are talking about is newer and probably has better method of getting rid of the viruses. I think McAfee doesn't slow down your computer as much either. Both are good virus detectors but I would go with McAfee. (It's cheaper too).

They both suck - I had 2 computers that were both infected by MalwareAlarm. One had Norton and the other had McAfee. Both worthless for that particular threat (which is a common one).

My 2 yr old computer has been rebooting about two minutes after startup. I disabled the automatic reboot under system properties. It rebooted anyway, but I got a blue screen with this message.: SPBBCDrv.sys. Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_Area.

After restart, I allowed WIndows error reporting to send a message to MS. The help page said "problem cause by antivirus software." I've had the same Norton antivirus, updated yearly, on here since I purchased the computer. Anyone have any ideas what this error message means and/or steps I should take to fix this? I'm using Outlook Express at work, and the boss is wanting me to delete messages in the outbox folder. Everything seems to work fine until I click on it, and once I do, I notice that in the Task manager the memory usage soars and eventually everything slows down to null and eventually freezes. I've gone through some of the options and ran antivirus software (Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition) and it doesn't detect anything. In fact, the computer runs at perfect capacity. Any help or advice is warranted.

The Valve game Portal for PC keeps crashing on my Dell inspiron 6000 laptop. I have updated what I believe all my drivers. I can start the first level of the game but when the first portal is created I have about 20-40 seconds to move inside the cell thing. If so, then I'm not sure, but if not, you probably need more graphics processing power.

One idea:

Try loading the game, and steam, only. Close all anti virus, anti spyware, etc, etc, etc, everything else, and see if it works... if it does, try again, turning one program on at a time, until it crashes, and then u might know which program is interfering.

First, before removing IE7, do you have any of those "helpful" toolbars installed on your browser? If so, then remove those.

Also, IE7 has an option to run with no add-ons. You can get this by going to your Start Menu -%26gt; Programs -%26gt; Accessories -%26gt; System Tools. Try running that to see if it gives you the same problems.

Later, it said that the situation had been resolved and the virus was deleted. So, I tried logging in again, and it said that a virus has been detected and access to the file was denied. Is this a problem with my computer or with Yahoo, or does one of my emails have a virus attached to it? I don't know much about this kind of stuff so any help would be appreciated. Can you access Windows in Safe Mode? Push F8 several times when starting up. If you can login in Safe Mode, it could be a file in your startup folder trying to kick off when you login. Go to Start %26gt; Run %26gt; and type "msconfig". (without quotes). Click on the Startup tab and look for boot.vbs/boots.vbs. If it's there, uncheck it and try starting up again.

As far as I know, boot.vbs is NOT a part of Windows, I don't have it on my computer. That means that if the aboev method doesn't work, your virus is probably still lurking in your computer somewhere, so try some online scans.

My web browser (microsoft internet explorer 7) always go to default webpage which direct it to some irritating antivirus software homepage. I had uninstall it ( the explorer), I had download ad-aware 2007, my anti-virus is AVG but it seems not helping at all. I had changed my default homepage from internet option tab, still not working. Full system scan antivirus had removed some malicious spyware and adware but this web browser hijacker still there. Any other option beside re-formatting the hard disk?

By what you're saying it sounds like it's smitfraud. Smitfraud is a malware, which is very hard to remove. It bombard you with pop ups, takes over your homepage and slows down your computer. Here's a link to the fix:

Recently I submitted a question about having malware or a virus that causes my computer to sometimes play audio on its own. My antivirus program hadn't detected anything, but people suggested that I use a trial version of Kaspersky and it definitely caught a problem. There are two files which appear to install themselves, indt2.sys and andt.sys and although I have tried quarintine, denying the function, and going in via safe mode and deleting the files, they always come back within a few moments. I'm assuming that means some startup file I have is responsible, but they all check out with the antivirus software I've been using. Thanks again!

It sounds like you are infected with a trojan. So I think you are having a hard time because trojan's are not exactly viruses. So most anti-virus programs will not remove them, because they do not see them as viruses.

I was running AVG Antivirus and Comodo Firewall but they clash which results in the AVG email scanner not working.

I uninstalled AVG and installed Avira but it does not scan emails at all.

i think you got your wording wrong they don't exactly clash ,it just that when avg wants to go get it's updates, which occurs on a daily basis your firewall is denying it permission am i right? you can run avg and comodo together you just have to configure comodo to allow avg access to the web for it's updates. or failing that turn off the automatic update feature of avg and manually get your updates. if by chance there is a clash over scanning e-mails just turn it off and go to one of the web based e-mail clients i.e. yahoo/hotmail or g-mail. anyone who really cares about keeping their windoze clean does'nt use outlook anyway.
Norton Anti-Virus will scan emails, and Norton has a firewall (in Internet Security or 360 package) and I don't have a problem with them.
I have never heard of AVG conflicting with Comodo before, but if you are sure they are, then you will obviously need to remove one of them.

Normally your malware programs will delete these beasts. If this is not the case you should be aware that a lot of viruses, spyware %26 adware are designed to sit in RAM, the registry and System Restore and because of this will return even after deleting or re-booting. Removing can be a little time consuming but thankfully not impossible. Yes there are many sites offering solutions to removal but why not do the obvious yourself?

Here we go. I'm fixing my friend's dell (windows xp). It had some viruses and I cleaned it up in regular operation mode, then again in safe mode and removed 4 infected files. Today when the virus scan was running I was able to access the internet, then ever since it says there is a corrupted/deleted file in the winsock catalog and it has limited or no connectivity. So, I tried running the diagnostic for internet explorer and it reset it, but that didn't work. Tried searching the winsock fix manually in "search" and it reset it, but that didn't work. Then I tried going into command prompt and typing in the key words and it reset it again, but still didn't work. The wisock repair didn't work, but it still won't let me go online and keeps asking me to reset, then restart, but it still won't work. Is the antivirus not doing the job and getting all those viruses out or something? What's going on? Not sure how up to date her security is. Can't access antivirus software online either? help!!

The pop-up will come up and will have a fake close button, inside the real window (it's a bit hard to explain without a picture), so when you think you're closing the window, you're actually clicking on a link to download a virus. I麓ve tried to reinstall the plug and play software device enumerator and I have installed new audio drivers several times, but nothing seems to work and if I open the control panel and check sounds and devices properties, it says "no audio device" although if I tab into the hardware button, it says all devices are working properly. You may need a new sound card.First make sure that your old one is seated all the way.Unplug your tower then press the start switch.this drains the capacitors..then before you go into the case be sure to touch the metal frame to get rid of any static electricity.Check if there is a loose jumper wire that fell off.Look at the sound card and check if the end clips are laying down.If they are just press down on the top edge of the card.You will here and feel the card snap into place.The clips will be locked in the up positron when every thing is right. Are the speaker wires in the right place?Are the volume controls on the CD player turned on.you could get anew sound card at Walmart and if that wasn't the problem you can return it. My Norton Anti-virus software detected a virus called Eicar Test String (i think it's called). I looked this virus up and i found out that it's just to test if an antivirus software is working or not, but when Norton Anti-virus found it, it couldn't quarantine nor fix it. I have all the settings 100% to the point perfect the way yahoo tells me to setup outlook express. The SMTP and the POP are correct and the ports are correct. I have tried alternat ports and get the same issue with ports that yahoo says are suppose to work as well if 25 is blocked by your ISP. The PC has no antivirus software and has no firewall at all, windows or software installed firewall. I can recieve emails and send them with no errors at all as if it works perfect but the person does not recieve the email. I have sent emails from yahoo's web mail and they send perfect in less then a second. I just upgraded my account from classic to plus and within seconds of upgrading my account I was able to use the POP just not able to send emails.....or able to send but not able to recieve on the other end. To delete Internet explorer, Go to Control Panel ==%26gt; Add or Remove Programs ==%26gt; Add/remove windows components (on the left side). Make sure there's no check next to Internet Explorer. Then, press Next.

You can also delete other windows components in the same way.

Use "Add or Remove Programs" in "Control Panel" to get rid of all the programs you don't need.

Once you do that, manually delete all the files you don't need from your disk drives.

You can also delete files from the "Program Files" folder in the C drive.

But don't delete anything from the "Windows" folder.

You can even delete the program shortcuts from the start menu.

This should be enough to give you a completely clean PC.

It's not part of your question but you should also clean your registry using a registry cleaner program. That will really speed up your PC.

Free AVG is one of the worst,as far as my personal experience goes.When I used it ,I had so many unexpected problems,still no virus was found by an updated avg.Later mcafee detected around 30 infected files.

I've had mine for about 2-3 years now and it seems like the older it gets the more problems I've had with it.

I've already taken everything off of it and started it anew again, but that only worked for so long.

I take care of it, and have spyware and antivirus software, but idk. I also defrag and do disk clean up, and i have window washer software. But now it seems like my graphic card is giving out because my games don't play like they used to. Any ideas to get my computer working somewhat like new again?

Granted it may be old in PC years and it certainly sounds if your taking care of it to the best of your ability. I've got two PC's at 6-7 years old that still run fine and are relatively fast. They don't run the latest gaming stuff or fancy video stuff,but for basic everyday surfing and home office stuff the run quite well.This could be separated into two parts , hardware and software side. For hardware i would look at upgrading your RAM as much as possible and possibly upgrading your Video card. Combined these would still be a whole lot cheaper than purchasing a brand new PC. On the software side I go with the motto of "lean and mean". Go through you add/remove programs and remove any unnecessary programs. Also clean out and backup your documents of old stuff I'm amazed on how much I accumulate over time and then delete. Run a program like CCleaner and clean out the rest of the computer of unnecessary stuff.Also stay away from little extras like fancy task bars, screen saver's and other what I call junk programs that are to me just fancy window dressings that hog up system resources. After all that do a good system defrag and it should run smoother. Good luck.

I'm using a Nintendo Wifi USB connector, with my Windows XP Laptop. I have the internet protocol on the USB connector's settings set to auto-obtain IP and DNS, have tried changing that and it still doesn't work.

I've downloaded the latest software, I've uninstalled and reinstalled until my hands were sore, I've turned off all antivirus software that I possibly can (I think Norton's still somewhat running, but I've tried everything and can't stop it).

Now, the problem: When I connection test, my computer says the wii is recieving full signal, right up till the end. Yet, always, up on my TV screen there pops a message saying the followng:

Your windows is not genuine and Microsoft has put warning message. To resolve, you need to connect to internet and press "resolve" so Microsoft website give you direction on how to buy product key and make it genuine.

God must be watching over you. Nortons %26 Mcafee, is the very worse junk out there for years. An each an every passing year they continue to get worse. They are hugh resource hogs and they don't really know one virus when you are hit with one. Plus they cliam they remove them, but they are still in your system.

In my spare time I test antivirus/antispyware programs to see if they perform as claimed.

The only two I have found that really work an I consider them to be state of the art technology that is light years ahead of any other free or paid program.

An error is generating when accessing yahoo chat rooms. The error reads:"The computer's audio mixer could not be initialized". It appears that no one has been able to troubleshoot this issue because updating sound drivers, lowering the firewall settings, removing the antivirus software does not resolve the issue. I have already exchanged 3 laptops and the same problem is recurring. The link is that the laptops have High definition audio drivers and yahoo is not compatible to this. My recommendation would be to go to your cuzs, and ask him/her to put the your hard drive into their computer, and for them, or you, to format the drive as a FAT32 drive, then you will be able to install win98se from the disk.

After reinstalling XP Home Edition my display settings were set at a very low level and I can't seem to adjust them. I went through the troubleshooting process but some of the options it suggested I was not able to access.

The computer was very buggy, adware, spyware and viruses out the yinyang. It was beyond using antivirus software or anti-malware software to repair it.

Is it possible that the reboot did not remove all the malware? Would using a good hard drive eraser solve this problem? Or do I need to look at other options?

I've just upgraded my antivirus software to AVG 8.0 and ran a scan. It has found a whole bunch of adware linked to ActiveX controls in my HKLM registry (path HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\ ).

AVG is asking me if I want to remove them - which would mean they'll be encrypted and put in the virus vault - so they can be restored if needed, but I'm aware that messing with ActiveX controls isn't a good idea so I'm not sure what to do with them!

I don't even know how I got the adware as I have the 'optimum' security settings for ActiveX and only download them when asked, from legitimate websites.

I also haven't had any problems with popups etc as a result of the adware in the controls but my pc does sometimes run a bit slow and occasionally fails to boot when I switch on, I'm not certain that this is due to the adware either though.

Soooo... Should I 'let the sleeping dogs lie' or let AVG move them and see what happens?

my computer have been attack by a virus but i do not know how to removed it . it corrupted my wins xp and i have to format the whole hdd (not a single partition as usual) and even now trace of it is still visible (the new wins xp is unstable-frequent crash, antivirus software,games, application, firewall mostly will not be able to be install on first try and sometimes the setup.exe even corrupted . Avg wont be able to be install since it crash 3 times already while installing. not to mention the wins xp refused to be install while in formatting process (it kept saying 'fail to copy from...' until i delete all previous partition). My friend have check the my whole hardware and all of them are working properly(and he is junior instructor in computer maintenance in a private college but cant do much in software problem) . So what do you think?

If you have done a complete hard drive format, you shouldn't have any traces of the virus on it. Have you done a hard drive check to see if your hard drive is going bad? How old is the hard drive in question? If you think you have a virus still hanging about, pay the money for an anti-virus program that will check your system before it installs. Instead of formatting from windows, do your formatting from command line.

Are you running Norton by any chance? if so, disable it and see if that helps the speed of start up. if it does, then you can adjust the settings to enable after start up. Also, check in your start/programmes/startup folder and see if there are programmes set to start up that could be disabled. Sometimes you can see what is running in the background by the icons on the lower right hand side of the screen.

I suggest taking it to the place where you got it from before the warranty expires. Since it is a new one, we should assume you have a good sound card in there and it could be faulty. We had a faulty dvd drive on a one month old laptop so it's possible you could have a faulty hardware (or software) in there too.
I have a HP laptop..n ive always had a fast startup. Ok..when u start up..on teh bottom right..do u have many programs that also start up when u start up? If so.that's probably why. Open one of them up..n in the options..uncheck where it says, "Start program when windows starts"

or you can just format the drives and install the os freshly

My dell stopped working properly. At first when I turn it on, it says that some software or hardware change may have caused this. When I try all of the options, such as last known good configuration and safe mode, it starts up fine at the windows with the loading bar and then it goes to a blue screen. The blue screen says to disable any antivirus software, disk defragmentation, or backup utilities. The technical information reads: *** Stop: 0x00000024. It means that your disk drive has become corrupted or at least a vital driver file has!

If you have the windows CD you can boot from the CD to the recovery console and run chkdsk from their. Place the CD in the drive, boot from the CD and press R for Recovery console - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Blue screen and stop errors are usually related to memory problems. (especially if the 0x0000024 number is the same) Try removing the memory sticks in your computer one at a time in sequentially order to see if it boots. If it boots with one of the sticks missing then you know it needs to be replaced.

It sounds to me like you've got an illegal (pirated) version of XP.When you insall XP, you have a limited time in which to register and activate it. After this time , the program blocks a lot of the functionality.
